Repat was founded in 2012 by Ross Lohr and Nathan Rothstein. Lohr spent time in Africa observing all the shirts that get donated in the US and wind up in these large second-hand markets in places like Nairobi and Dar es-Salaam. Lohr and Rothstein teamed up to find ways to prevent excess clothing from getting thrown out, and it appeared that Americans wanted an affordable way to preserve their t-shirt memories.
Since launching, Repat has sold over 175,000 custom t-shirt quilts to people around the country, and has become the largest e-commerce upcycler in the country. In 2016, Inc Magazine named Repat one of the fastest growing and most innovative companies in the country, and they were recently named the 15th fastest growing private company in Massachusetts by the Boston Business Journal. Repat has been featured on CNN, MSNBC, WBUR, Fast Company, the Boston Globe, Entrepreneur Magazine and Vogue.
